Building Up the Detail

Lay Out the Stack

Draw the assembled section full-size on a scrap board. Mark where each component lands before cutting anything.

Install Backers First

Any flat stock or nailer in the assembly goes up first, fastened into framing. This is what the shaped profiles fasten to.

Work in Order

Set the base layer, then each layer over it, checking the reveal against your layout drawing as you go.

Cope Inside, Miter Outside

Cope inside corners on each layer independently. Miter and glue outside corners.

Fasten Every Layer

Each component gets its own fasteners into framing or into the backer — never rely on glue alone between layers.

Fill, Caulk, Finish

Fill nail holes, caulk every layer seam, and prime and paint the assembly as one piece.
